Exceeding Codes with SIPs
Arizona and Clark County, Nevada, recognize the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC), but both have also adopted the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). In Arizona, roughly 65% of all new construction activity – residential and commercial – occurs in regions under the IECC. This code establishes a baseline for energy efficiency by setting performance standards for the building envelope and R-Value minimums of 38 roof, 13 walls in Maricopa County, 20 in most of Arizona, and 20 in Clark County. The building envelope is also required to be properly sealed and tested, and verified as having an air leakage rate no higher than 5 Air Changes per Hour (ACH) in climate zone 2 (includes Maricopa and Yuma counties) and 3 ACH in all other AZ climate zones, along with Clark County, NV. Premier SIPs can easily achieve less than 2 ACH, and, with an experienced installer, often achieves less than 1 ACH.
